Police in Isiolo County have recovered 21 stolen sheep and goats in a joint security operation in the Burat area, marking another breakthrough in efforts to stop livestock theft in the region.
In a statement, the National Police Service said the successful recovery followed a coordinated patrol by officers from Kulamawe Police Station, National Police Reservists, and local elders who helped trace the stolen animals.
“Police officers in Isiolo County have recovered 21 stolen sheep and goats following a coordinated patrol operation in the Burat area,” the statement read. “The team from Kulamawe Police Station, working jointly with National Police Reservists, conducted extensive patrols across LMD, KMC, Mlango, and Leparua, about 25 kilometres west of the station, after receiving reports of livestock theft in the area.”
The officers, together with elders, combed several villages including LMD, KMC, Mlango, and Leparua after reports that animals had been driven away by thieves. Their cooperation led to the recovery of all 21 animals.
“During the operation, officers engaged local elders who assisted in the recovery of the 21 animals, which were then handed over to their owner,” police said.
Security teams have since stepped up patrols and surveillance across Isiolo and nearby regions to curb livestock theft, which has long troubled herders and farmers in northern Kenya. The National Police Service said such efforts will continue until all suspects behind the incidents are caught.
“Security patrols in the region have been intensified to pursue the criminals involved in the livestock theft and to ensure they face justice,” the statement added.
The police further praised the officers and community members who contributed to the successful operation, calling for continued cooperation between residents and security agencies in reporting suspicious activities.
“The NPS commends the officers and community members who supported the recovery efforts and urges continued cooperation in reporting suspicious activities through the toll-free hotlines 999, 911, 112, or anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000,” read the statement.
Authorities say the cooperation between the police, reservists, and elders has become an important part of the ongoing strategy to deal with livestock theft and improve security in Isiolo.
